It is an oligosaccharide that can be synthesized from D-galactose and propionic acid in the presence of triethyl orthoformate. The molecular weight of this compound is 706.07 g/mol. Propionyl 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxygalactopyranoside has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and preventing transcription and replication.
