It binds to bacteria 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 5-O-Tert.butyldimethylsilyl - 2- C- methyl- 2, 3- O- isopropylidene - D- ribonic acid gamma lactone also has antiinflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
