Tubacin hydrate is a natural product that inhibits histone deacetylases (HDACs) and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Tubacin hydrate acts by binding to the HDAC6 protein, which regulates transcription of genes involved in cell growth. It also binds to transcriptional factors, such as NF-κB, and blocks the transcription of these factors in cancer cells. Tubacin hydrate has been shown to be effective as a chemotherapeutic agent against prostate cancer cells and k562 cells. Tubacin hydrate also shows significant cytotoxicity against hematopoietic cells and hdac6-positive breast cancer cells.
