3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxyinosine (3'-ddI) is a synthetic nucleoside with antiviral properties. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of viral DNA and RNA, which prevents the production of new viruses. 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxyinosine is active against both herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2, as well as cytomegalovirus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The drug also has anticancer potential, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of several cancer cell lines in vitro. 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxyinosine is phosphorylated by adenosine kinase to its active form, 3'-amino-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine monophosphate (3' ddAMP), which inhibits DNA synthesis by competitively inhibiting deoxynucleotide triphosphates during
