AZT has antiviral activity against various DNA and RNA viruses, including HIV. It is also effective in the treatment of cancer. AZT inhibits viral replication by competitively inhibiting the incorporation of diphosphate into viral DNA or RNA. This process prevents the synthesis of new virus particles and the spread of infection to healthy cells. In addition, AZT may inhibit tumor growth by interfering with cell division and DNA synthesis.
