Potassium tetrabromoaurate(III) dihydrate is an inorganic compound. It is a salt of potassium and bromoaurate. This salt has been shown to be sensitive to light and has been used as a photocatalyst. Potassium tetrabromoaurate(III) dihydrate has shown antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The reaction product of potassium tetrabromoaurate(III) dihydrate with galactose produces the antiviral agent, potassium bromoaurate(II) dibenzylthiocarbamate. Potassium tetrabromoaurate(III) dihydrate can also be used in organic synthesis reactions as a thiolating agent, as well as in the modification of protein adducts.
