1-(4'-Methoxy-biphenyl-4-yl)-ethanone (1) is a dipole that has been shown to undergo cross-coupling reactions. It is a homologue of 4-ethoxybiphenyl and the ethoxy groups are located on opposite sides of the molecule, which means it will have different interactions than the orthorhombic biphenyl. 1 has been found to crystallize in a nonpolar orthorhombic planar conformation and can be used as a catalyst for Suzuki couplings. The planar conformation is also stabilized by steric hindrance from the bulky methoxy group on one side of the molecule and the remaining ethoxy group on the other.
