3-Bromophenanthrene-9,10-dione is a thermally and hydrostatically activated luminescent material that can be used to detect residual oil and water. It has an optimum transition of 530 nm and emission peaks at 547 nm. The compound also undergoes a conformational change from a trans to cis conformation when it is subjected to pressure or high temperature. 3-Bromophenanthrene-9,10-dione can be analyzed by UV/VIS spectroscopy, which yields information about its conformation and purity. This compound exists in two polymorphs: the alpha form and beta form. The alpha form is more stable than the beta form at ambient conditions.
