4-Pyridinecarboxylic acid, 3-ethyl-, methyl ester (PCME) is a synthetic chemical compound that belongs to the group of indole alkaloids. It is used as a precursor in the synthesis of dasycarpidone, an anti-inflammatory drug. PCME is synthesised by the dehydrogenation of 4-(3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-pyridinyl)-2-butanone (1). Protonation of PCM yields the enamine 2 and subsequent reaction with chloroacetyl chloride leads to the desired product. The synthesis of PCME can be described as follows:
