1-Butyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazole is a ligand that binds to metal ions, such as hydroxide ions. It has been shown that the interaction between 1-butyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazole and hydroxide ions results in the formation of an inorganic complex. The electrostatic interaction between 1-butyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazole and hydroxide ions is greater than with other ligands, because of its higher charge density. This reaction can be monitored using functional groups. 1 butyl 2 methyl 1H imidazole has also been shown to be a stabilizer for membranes by binding to functional groups on lipid bilayers containing phospholipids and cholesterol molecules.
