2-Methyl-7-nitro-2H-indazole is a mutagenic compound that has been shown to have neuroprotective and mutagenic properties. This compound is a structural analog of indazoles, which are compounds that inhibit the activity of DNA polymerase. The nitro group in 2-methyl-7-nitro-2H-indazole may be responsible for its mutagenic activity, as it can be converted to an electrophilic nitrene intermediate by reaction with nucleophiles such as guanine or adenine. The methyl group in the compound may also play a role in its neuroprotective properties. 2-Methyl-7-nitro-2H-indazole has been shown to protect neurons against oxidative stress and death induced by glutamate toxicity.
