Silicon tetraiodide is a chemical compound with the formula SiI4. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, ether, and carbon tetrachloride. Silicon tetraiodide has been used to produce silicon-containing compounds for use in semiconductors and other electronic devices. It can be used to form silicon dioxide or silicon nitride by heating it with water vapor or ammonia gas respectively. The reaction produces hydrogen fluoride gas as a byproduct, which must be removed from the system before it reacts with the SiI4. Silicon tetraiodide is chemically stable under normal conditions and does not react with halides or divalent hydrocarbons.
