Tungsten chlorides are a group of inorganic compounds that are composed of tungsten and chlorine. Tungsten chlorides can be prepared by reacting tungsten with hydrochloric acid, which is an organic solvent. They can also be obtained by the reaction of tungsten with silicon chloride or organic acids, such as methoxy groups. Tungsten chlorides have been used as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of olefins and other organic compounds. Their nmr spectra show peaks at around 8 ppm for the methoxy groups and at about 7 ppm for the chloride group. The functional theory is based on the assumption that tungsten chlorides are planar molecules with a central metal atom surrounded by six ligands (chlorine atoms). The molecular geometry of these molecules is square pyramidal, with one short bond between each ligand and the central atom, and one longer bond to another ligand at an angle of about 120°.
