5,8,11-Eicosatriynoic acid is a bacterial metabolite that has been shown to inhibit the cytosolic calcium channel. The inhibition of this channel leads to an increase in the cytosolic calcium concentration and physiological effects such as vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation. 5,8,11-Eicosatriynoic acid is also involved in transcriptional regulation, polymerase chain reactions, and enzyme inhibition. It has been shown to have cardiovascular effects on atherosclerotic models in animal studies. 5,8,11-Eicosatriynoic acid also inhibits the activity of effector proteins in the immune system.
