Phleomycin is a cytotoxic antibiotic that belongs to the family of dithiocarbamate compounds. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and preventing transcription and replication. Phleomycin has been shown to be effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The drug can also be used as an amplifier for other antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, erythromycin, or chloramphenicol. This drug is not active against mycobacteria or acid-fast bacteria.
