3-(2-Nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2-diol is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the synthesis of DNA. It binds to the DNA in cells and prevents it from being replicated. 3-(2-Nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2-diol has been shown to cause tumour regression in many types of cancer cells, including those derived from solid tumours or rat liver microsomes. This drug also has carcinogenic potential and may be used as a prodrug for other agents. 3-(2-Nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2 diol can be converted by esterases to 2-[3-(4'-nitro[1,10]phenanthrolino)-3'-oxopropanoic acid], which is an active form of
