Magnesium molybdate is a corrosion inhibitor that is used to protect metals from atmospheric corrosion. It prevents the formation of rust by reacting with water vapor in the air and forming a protective layer on the metal surface. Magnesium molybdate has been shown to have a particle size of less than 10 micrometers, which can be reduced to 5 micrometers using ultrasonic treatment. It also reacts with aliphatic hydrocarbons to form an organic coating that helps prevent corrosion. The reaction mechanism is not well understood, but it may involve a monocarboxylic acid or nitrite ion as an intermediate.
