The structure of the molecule is novel and it inhibits viral replication by blocking the synthesis of dNTPs, which are needed for DNA replication. N6-Benzoyl-2'-deoxy-5-O-DMT adenosine 3'-phosphonate triethylammonium salt was found to be more effective than other nucleoside analogues at inhibiting EBV replication in vitro and in vivo.
