This drug inhibits the polymerase activity of reverse transcriptase and thus prevents the synthesis of DNA from RNA. 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-5'-triphosphate sodium salt has been shown to be effective against herpes viruses, influenza virus, and cytomegalovirus. This drug also prevents the replication of HIV.
