Descripción:Penbutolol is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent that is used to treat high blood pressure and some types of heart disease. It has been shown to inhibit the binding of a linker, expressed as (+)-penbutolol, to the beta-adrenergic receptor in cardiac muscle cells. Penbutolol prevents an increase in intracellular calcium by acting as an antagonist at the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor, which is responsible for the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve terminals. This drug also decreases systolic and diastolic blood pressure, but does not have any effect on heart rate. Penbutolol has been shown to be effective in treating hypertension and angina pectoris with no serious side effects when taken at low doses.
