Crystals were obtained by the transfer of the reaction mixture from an evaporating dish to a crystallization dish and allowed to cool slowly in air at room temperature. The chemical study of this compound involves energy transfer between phosphine and 8-hydroxyquinoline as well as X-ray crystallography, which showed a planar structure with two nitro groups and one methyl group attached to the quinolinium core.
