2-Hydrazino-4-methylpyrimidine is a heterocyclic compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of other heterocycles and pharmaceuticals. It is prepared by dehydrogenative alkylation of 2,6-dimethylaniline with 4-methylpyrimidine, followed by treatment with sodium hydroxide to give the corresponding hydrazone. The reaction proceeds via an intramolecular cyclization and yields are determined by the ratio of starting materials.
