This drug has been shown to have a high affinity for the histamine H1 receptor and is used as a potential anti-schistosomiasis agent. The chemical structure of this compound is related to that of ethyl formate, which can be synthesized in two steps from ethyl alcohol. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of an iminium ion, followed by the elimination of formaldehyde to yield 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethylamine hydrochloride. 2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)ethyaminolcyanide has also been shown to possess some biological properties such as cytotoxicity against cancer cells, anticonvulsant activity, and erythropoietic effects.
