2-Chloro-1-methyl-4-nitro-1H-imidazole (2C1M4NIT) is a nitro analog that has been found to cause rhabdomyosarcoma in mice. It is an ionizable molecule with two directional isomers, one of which is more toxic than the other. 2C1M4NIT has also been shown to cause DNA damage and inhibit RNA synthesis in cells. The toxicity of this compound may be due to its ability to bind with chlorine and form a chloramine, which can then react with water to produce hydrochloric acid.
