It is a potent estrogen that can be used in the treatment of prostate cancer, to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. 4-[(1E)-2-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]phenol has been shown to have antiestrogenic activity in breast cancer cell lines and to inhibit the formation of estrogen analogs in vitro. 4-[(1E)-2-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]phenol has been used as an estrogen receptor ligand in transfection experiments with human breast cancer cells, resulting in inhibition of target gene expression.
