The compound is chemically stable and does not degrade easily by hydrolysis or oxidation. It can bind to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and inhibit DNA synthesis. 5,6-Dichlorobenzimidazole-1-b-D-ribofuranoside also affects cell nuclei by inhibiting DNA synthesis and enzyme activities.
