2',3'-Dideoxyadenosine (ddA) is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the replication of HIV by binding to the active site of reverse transcriptase and blocking the synthesis of DNA. The drug has minimal toxicity due to its inability to cross the blood-brain barrier. 2',3'-Dideoxyadenosine is activated in vivo, and this activation is necessary for ddA's antiviral activity. The drug binds to cellular RNA polymerases and prevents transcription of viral DNA into RNA. It also inhibits epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase activity, which may be related to its antiproliferative effect on some cancer cells.
2',3'-Dideoxyadenosine has been shown to be safe for use during pregnancy in animal models, although there are no data on its use in pregnant women with HIV infection. In addition, there are no data on its pharmacokinetic properties, such as elimination half-life or volume of
