It has been shown to be an activator of DNA synthesis and an inhibitor of RNA synthesis. It has also been shown to inhibit tumor growth and prolong the survival time for patients with leukemia. The antiviral activity of 2,6-dichloro-9-(2'-deoxy-β-D-ribofuranosyl)purine may be due to its ability to inhibit viral DNA polymerase. This drug is also known as dideoxyinosine (ddI).
