It is used as an antiviral agent and has been shown to have anticancer effects in vitro. 5'-O-DMT-2'-O-methylcytidine is synthesized by modification of the natural deoxyribonucleosides, which are then phosphoramidited to form a 5'-O-DMT-2'-O-methylcytidine monophosphate. The synthesis process also produces diphosphate and triphosphate forms of the nucleoside, which can be used for other purposes.
