1-(3',5'-Di-O-benzoyl-2'-deoxy-2'-fluoro-b-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-iodouracil (1FIAU) is a modified nucleoside that is used as an activator in RNA synthesis. It has anticancer properties and can be used to treat leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. 1FIAU is synthesized by the modification of the ribose sugar with 2'-deoxy-2'-fluoro-b-D arabinofuranosyl group at position 5' of the sugar ring. This modified sugar can be phosphorylated by adenosine kinase to form 1FIAU monophosphate (1FIAUMP). 1FIAUMP is then converted to 1FIAU diphosphate (1FIAUDP), which has antiviral and antitumor activities.
