Descripción:Azathioprine is a drug that suppresses the immune system and is used to treat autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and inflammatory bowel disease. It is an immunosuppressant that prevents the formation of antibodies by blocking the enzyme thiopurine S-methyltransferase. Azathioprine is metabolized in the liver to 6-mercaptopurine, which has been shown to cause leukopenia. The genetic polymorphism of this enzyme can lead to differences in the metabolism and toxicity of azathioprine therapy.
