It has antiviral activity and is used in the synthesis of oligonucleotides. 2'-Deoxyxanthosine 5'-monophosphate is also used as a phosphoramidite in the chemical synthesis of DNA, and can be modified with fluorine or other atoms to form synthetic analogues.
