1-(2'-Deoxy-2'-fluoro-a-L-arabinofuranosyl)-thymine is a novel nucleoside that is a modified nucleotide with a fluorine atom in the 2' position of the sugar moiety. It can be used as an antiviral, anticancer and antiedemic agent, and has been shown to inhibit replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro. In addition, it has been shown to have antiangiogenic activity in mice. 1-(2'-Deoxy-2'-fluoro-a-L-arabinofuranosyl)-thymine has also been reported to be an inhibitor of DNA synthesis and protein synthesis.
