5-Iodo-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid methyl ester (MTIC) is a reagent used for the dehalogenation of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatic compounds. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 5-iodo-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid with an excess of methyl iodide in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. The yield is high and it can be purified by recrystallization or column chromatography. The reactivity of MTIC is determined by its triplet state which can be created with light irradiation. This triplet state has a long lifetime and is unreactive towards esters such as ethyl acetate.
