Pyributicarb is an herbicide that inhibits plant metabolism. It is a carbonyl-containing compound with a chlorine atom and a pyrazole ring. Pyributicarb binds to the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, which is involved in the production of cholesterol, leading to cell death. The herbicidal effects of pyributicarb may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of chlorophyll and other carotenoids. Pyributicarb has been shown to inhibit human cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which is involved in the metabolism of drugs such as flazasulfuron, causing drug interactions.
