It is an antiviral agent for use in the treatment of HIV, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and influenza virus infections. 5-Ethynyl-2'-O-methyluridine triphosphate is also used as a precursor to synthesize DNA and RNA. This compound has been shown to have anticancer properties against breast cancer cells.
