It is used in the synthesis of a penicillin-binding protein (PBP) analog, which is a molecule that can bind to the PBP and inhibit bacterial growth. The activation of N-benzoyl-D-alanylthioglycolic acid is achieved by reacting it with an organic base such as pyridine or triethylamine. This product has been shown to be effective against streptococcus and other bacterial cells that are resistant to cefotaxime due to its ability to cause cell lysis.
