Trans-3-ethoxycinnamic acid can inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting the cell membrane and denaturing proteins. It can also be used to remove stains from clothing or dishware. This compound has been shown to be soluble in water and oil, but insoluble in benzene and diethyl ether. Trans-3-ethoxycinnamic acid reacts with ultraviolet light to produce fluorescent compounds that are used for staining DNA.
