PF-04691502 is a potential cancer drug that prevents the mitochondrial membrane potential from collapsing. It is an inhibitor of the mitochondrial enzyme acetyl-coA carboxylase, which catalyzes the production of malonyl-CoA and regulates cellular transformation. PF-04691502 has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in xenograft models of renal cell cancer and T-cell lymphomas. In addition, it has been shown to be a potential biomarker for cancer. PF-04691502 also reduces hepatic steatosis and energy metabolism in mice with liver disease. PF-04691502 induces autophagy, or the process by which cells break down and recycle their own components, which may contribute to its therapeutic effects.
PF-04691502 has minimal toxicity in animal models and is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for use in combination with other anticancer drugs as part of chemotherapeutic treatment regimens for various types of cancer
