ONC206 is a human mitochondrial-derived compound that has potent antitumor activity. It has been shown to rapidly decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is critical for energy metabolism and cell viability. ONC206 also disrupts cellular processes involved in cancer cell proliferation, including the up-regulation of genes related to cancer cell growth and survival. ONC206 is chemically stable and does not affect normal cells. This drug exhibits synergistic effects with other anticancer drugs and may be useful for treating pediatric cancers as well as brain tumors.
