It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, as well as HIV and influenza virus. This drug also has antiviral effects against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). 2',3',5'-Tri-O-acetylnebularine inhibits viral replication by inhibiting DNA synthesis and RNA transcription, which prevents the production of proteins needed for cell multiplication.
