It is an allosteric inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of proteins and chlorophyll, as well as ATP synthesis in plastids of plants. 6-Thioguanosine-5'-O-diphosphate sodium salt has been shown to be effective at inhibiting protein synthesis in mammalian cells, which may be due to its ability to bind to the metabotropic glutamate receptor. The molecule was also found to bind with high affinity to a ternary complex that includes glutamine, glutamate, and ammonia.
