Carboxymethyl-a-cyclodextrin sodium salt (CMD) is a cyclodextrin that has been modified by the addition of carboxymethyl groups to one or more of its six oxygen atoms. CMD has shown cytotoxic activity against malaria parasites in vitro and has exhibited potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is used as an excipient in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products. CMD may cause depression, a side effect that is seen with antimalarial drugs. The skeletal structure of CMD consists of two pyramids joined at their bases, forming a six-sided figure with the two carboxymethyl groups on each face. This shape may be important for its stability and toxicity to cells.
