Descripción

Stevioside is a natural sweetener that is extracted from the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It contains inulin, an insoluble fiber that can be used as a prebiotic and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Stevioside has been shown to have in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae and also inhibits protein synthesis in mammalian cells. This compound has been used in pediatric patients with diarrhea, but it is not recommended for use in pregnant women or those with kidney disease. Stevioside can be found as a dietary supplement or as an additive in processed foods such as ice cream, soft drinks, and dairy products. Stevioside can also be used as a preservative for meat or fish, but should not be consumed by infants because of its potential toxicity on the muscle.
