N,N'-Bis(p-toluenesulfonyl)hydrazine is a crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents and reacts with nucleophiles. It has been used as a reagent for the synthesis of benzyl chloride. N,N'-Bis(p-toluenesulfonyl)hydrazine can be prepared by the reaction of toluene sulfonic acid chloride with hydrazine. The yield of this reaction is about 80%. The major impurity in this product is bis(p-toluenesulfonyl)amine which can be removed by recrystallization. Reaction time is typically less than one hour, and the product can be purified by column chromatography or recrystallization. N,N'-Bis (p-toluenesulfonyl)hydrazine has a diameter of 1.06 x 10 m.
