This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and protein. 1-Hydroxy-2,3,4,7-tetramethoxyxanthone is metabolized by hepatic microsomes in rats to secoiridoids with methoxy substituents (1′,2′,3′,4′-tetrahydroxypentane). The demethylation pathway has been studied with human liver cytosolic preparations.
