4-[(Methoxycarbonyl)oxy]benzoic acid (4-MOB) is a mesomorphic compound with a constant melting point and a mesophase. 4-MOB is synthesized by the reaction of (+/-)-4-hydroxybenzoic acid and methylamine in the presence of piperazine as a catalyst. The compound has been used in experiments to study the effect of temperature on the transition from one phase to another. Macrocyclic compounds are synthesised by transesterification. The macrocyclic ring of 4-MOB makes it possible for this compound to be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
