Diethanolamine hydrochloride is an additive that is used in the manufacture of detergents, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is also a component of a process for the production of nitroethane. Diethanolamine hydrochloride is synthesized by the reaction of diethanolamine with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride gas. This reaction produces a product with a white crystalline appearance, which dissolves in water to produce an alkaline solution. The chemical formula for diethanolamine hydrochloride is CH3-C(O)NH2-CH2-OH-CH2-NH2Cl.
