It has been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies and has been shown to be present in some human cancers. The concentration of 2,4-decadien-1-ol has also been found to correlate with the severity of lung cancer. It is not known how 2,4-decadien-1-ol causes cancer. It may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA repair or its damage to cell membranes. 2,4-Decadien-1-ol is also a marker for anthropogenic air pollution and can be found in damaged plant cells, such as those from drought or frosted plants.
