1-Heptyl-4-(4-pyridyl)pyridinium bromide is a potential candidate for use in solar cells. It has been shown to be an efficient electron donor, with high optical properties and a low band gap. This material can be used in the form of a chloride salt, which is the most stable form at room temperature. The protonation and deprotonation of 1-heptyl-4-(4-pyridyl) pyridinium bromide can be optimized by changing the pH and electrolyte solution. 1HEPYPB has been studied as a possible component in solar cells due to its ability to absorb light from visible wavelengths (400 to 700 nm). This material also shows repetitive behavior when exposed to electrons, which are able to travel through the molecule without recombining with other electrons.
